Tiger’s Nest Brief History

Tiger’s nest is one of the holiest places on the planet. The Tiger’s nest is strategically perched on a hill overlooking Paro valley. This place is especially venerated because of its association with Guru Rinpoche, who is said to have flown to Paro Tiger’s nest in the form of DorjiDrolo, mounted on a flaming dakini-tigress in the 747 A.D

Guru Rinpoche visited Bhutan for 3 times. His first visit to Bhutan in 746 A.D from India was when he was invited to Bumthang to treat the Sindhu Raja, the ruler of Bumthang, who was seriously ill. The king was cured and was converted to Buddhism. He promised to return to Bhutan again to further propagate the Buddhist teachings.

A year later, Guru Rimpoche was invited to Tibet by King ThrisongDuetshen to assist him in the construction of the Samye Monastery. He travelled to Tibet and by his tantric powers he cleared away the demonic forces that were disturbing the construction of the monastery and so the monastery was successfully completed.

During this visit in 747 A.D to Tibet, Guru Rimpoche decided to visit Bhutan again with his Tibetan consort khandroYeshiTshogyel and DenmaTsemang. He travelled all over the country and blessed the people.

While in SingyeDzonginKurtoe, Guru is believed to have flown to ParoTakshang( Tiger’s Nest) in the form of Guru DrojiDrolo, the 8th and the final aspect that he assumed, mounting on a dakini-tigress. Before his arrival, the whole country was believed to have been inhabited by hostile evils spirits. On his arrival he subdued eight categories of evil spirits and bounded them by solemn oath to be the protectors of teaching for all times to come.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrival at Paro

Fly into Bhutan with Druk Air, Bhutan’s national carrier. The green wall of hills known as duars, or gateways, into Bhutan from the plains of India rise ever higher as the plane flies north towards the Tibet border. Silvery rivers rush along the valleys, waterfalls plunge down forested mountainsides and, to the north, the great snowcapped peaks of the inner Himalayas rise up to the heavens. Farmhouses dot the hillsides on either side of the plane.

As the aircraft enters the Paro valley, look down to see Paro Dzong on the hillside overlooking the Paro Chu (river), with Ta Dzong, formerly a watchtower and now the National Museum, above it. The representative of 7 Brothers Tours and Travels, our loca guide and driver who will be with you throughout your visit, will be waiting for you at Paro airport. After completion of airport formalities, you will drive through the lovely Paro valley to your hotel.

Afternoon free for activities, or at leisure.Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 02 : Paro Halt

Early in the morning you will have delicious breakfast and then straight away start for experiencing a small hike of 3 hrs to the Takshang monastery (The tiger’s nest). A small history will help you understand further and appreciate the monastery.

As believed by the Bhutanese, Guru Padmasambhava flew here on a tiger’s back in 8th century and meditated for three months. Later in 1684 this monastery was built. When you finish your climb you will reach a cafe where you will get a very good view of the monastery. There you will be served special fruits along with the pack lunch. For some tourists who want to get a very close view of the monastery, they can further climb for about 45 minutes and enjoy the 50 meter close view of the Tiger’s Nest. You can ask your guide to give you a detailed explanation. Later, when you reach back then the first sightseeing will be to visit the Drukgyel Dzong (fotress) which is 10 kms further. This dzong was built in 1684 by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyel to celebrate the victory over the Tibetans. At present too you can view this dzong in ruins since it was burned down accidentally by a candle fire in 1874.

You can move for lunch either in town or back to your hotel. After lunch you can visit National Museum at Paro. Inside the museum you will find many antique Thankas, different kinds of textiles, a small temple of life, different statues, etc. After this you can drive to Rimpung Dzong or the Paro dzong which was built in the 17th century. This dzong is now the administration center and school for the monks. In the evening you can take a short walk in the town. Overnight at the hotel
